(AP) A Plymouth Belvedere that was buried in a concrete vault nearly 50 years ago as part of the state's golden anniversary celebration will be unearthed in 2007 as part of the Oklahoma centennial festivities.

VALPARAISO, Ind. - A Michigan City man called police to report his car missing, but did not mention that his 4-month-old son had been left inside it, authorities said.

Porter County police officers found the car with the boy inside about 11 p.m. Sunday, parked in front of a home a few miles northwest of Valparaiso. They were called by the home's resident, who found the car with the driver's door open, the child inside, and no one else around.

The AP reports that Olga de Alaketu (Olga Francis Régis), Candomblé high priestess of the temple Ilê Maroiá Láji has passed away. The priestess died due to complications from diabetes according to doctors.

Earlier this year her temple (terreiro) was made a national heritage site by Brazil's Culture Ministry. The Minister of Culture Gilberto Gil said that Mother Olga was "the greatest proponent of the religion of the Orixas in all Brazil".

Her son Jocenira Barbosa said that her mother was a warrior, who left a legacy of knowledge for life. "[She was] a person who leaves good teachings within you so that you can live the best possible life. [She] is irreplaceable." Her daughter Genivaldo Barbosa said that her mother gave much of herself to the advancement of black culture. "We are losing a great representative of African culture. This is an enormous and irreparable loss".

Xeni Jardin: Following up on a previous Boing Boing post about reports of prisoner abuse in Louisiana during the post-Katrina crisis:

Lawyers for inmates there say prison guards abused some of the nearly 8,000 prisoners evacuated from flooded cells.

The allegations are contained in affidavits filed by lawyers who have interviewed thousands of inmates in recent weeks. The complaints include accusations that some guards left prisoners locked in their cells while floodwaters rose to their necks, and that others engaged in regular beatings and other abuse.

Editor's Note: Just as troubling as the long tradition of racist remarks from top Republicans are the GOP's missing or weakly worded apologies after such inflammatory incidents.

LOS ANGELES--The reaction was swift and angry to former Reagan honcho William Bennett's oddball racist crack that aborting black babies could reduce crime. The problem, though, was that those who instantly denounced Bennett were all Democrats. Even as calls were made for an apology or for Bennett to be fired from his syndicated national radio show, neither President Bush nor any other top GOP leader said a mumbling word about Bennett. Eventually the White House issued a weak statement calling Bennett's comments "inappropriate."

Evacuees Refused Apartments In Dallas

Angela Celius breaks down after being told there were no available units at an apartment complex.

Danielle Morgan, her five-year-old daughter Daisy and three other friends took a frustrating stroll to Reunion arena in a desperate search for assistance Tuesday.

Their names, once again, were absent from the available housing list, and the Timber Creek Apartments had just informed them they were full. Frustrations have started to build.

"I'm not used to this, I'm used to being in my home," Morgan said. "I didn't have a good life, but just to be thrown away and have to wait on the back burner - this is not cool."

However, what has Morgan really hot are the continual, exasperating conversations with apartment complexes.
But when News 8 producer Mark Smith, (who's Caucasian) made a call to the Timber Creek Apartments, that exhausting hunt seemed to be at a close end.

"Oh really, if I came in today you could make it available for me by the end of the month?" Smith asked during the call with the complex.

Morgan and the others wasted no time heading straight to the Timber Creek leasing office. But within the span of about 45 minutes, all available units suddenly became occupied.

An employee of the complex seemed to be confused at when and where apartments would be available.

"Right now we are trying to see what we got available, we are kinda on the edge and we need to know what we have available," she told the family.

Even Morgan's offer to pay up front was rejected.

To the family, the message couldn't have been more clear. The evacuees felt unwelcomed.

News 8 talked to the apartment manager shortly after Morgan's conversation with the complex employee to seek answers. Manager Lisa Spence confirmed what the employee told Morgan.

"At the moment, no," Spence said when asked if there was any available housing.

However, her position seemed to soften when Smith told her about the earlier phone conversation with the complex where it was expressed that units would be soon available. Spence later said she wanted to help the evacuees however she could.

"I'll be glad to put them at another property," she said.

While the family had finally found help, it was too little too late for friend Angela Celius. The sense of helplessness, compounded by rejection was at the moment too much to bear.

"If they have a heart, if they know what they are going through," she said through tears. "But thank God we are living. I thank you, yes."

Since the interview with the family, they have signed a lease at another complex with the help of Cheryl Binnie, a Dallas woman who they have called an angel.
Now begins the search for permanent jobs
